The Intriguing World of McQueen
The iconic flagship Alexander McQueen store on Old Bond Street, London has just undergone a dramatic makeover! The two-story building has re-opened with a bang and seeks to give an even greater insight into the enchanting world of McQueen. The floor space is dedicated to showcasing and demonstrating the inspiration behind the label, the brand, the designs and the couture – with each wall being covered in tailored paneling, cactus flowers, tangled flowers (the iris was a favorite of the late Alexander McQueen!) and of course skulls. The boutique is solely dedicated to women’s wear and accessories.
Paraphrasing Sarah Burton, the head creative director, the ideology behind McQueen is to not take things as they look from a distance but to experience them up close and uncover the actual truth behind them. It is of utmost importance that every item in the store feels “precious”. The designer has once again worked with David Collins Studio- which has designed the interiors for numerous McQueen stores.
Incredible news for ballet flat lovers!
Art director Hedi Slimane, as his directional debut for fashion house Saint Lauren, created a video called Dance where the Saint Lauren ballet flats- “Classic Ballerine”, were worn for an actual choreographed dance performance! Ballerina and model Lida Fox, featured in the video, is shot taking these shoes for a spin in the dance studio. Her awe-inspiring performance demonstrates how comfortable yet chic these soft shoes are and makes us want to go out and buy a pair! This video is the second in the series introducing Saint Laurent’s new fall shoe collection, launching this November. The first video, also called Dance, featured model Gracie Van Gastel with a hula hoop. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uPFOjvEVsik)
What makes ballet flats our favorite type of shoe is that they look just as sophisticated as heels. Paired with leggings, skinny jeans, or a dress; ballet flats are the go to shoe for any occasion. They can even be carried in your bag for those late nights when you just can’t walk another step in those 6 inch heels. Looks like we just found our perfect pair at Saint Laurent!
A tribute to Hedi Slimane
Hedi Slimane’s tenure at Saint Lauren Paris has easily been the most controversial – as soon as he was appointed in March 2012, reporters and fashion press spoke endlessly about how the “grunge” look is disrespectful to the late and legendary Yves Saint Laurent. He changed the logo, moved the design studio from Paris to Los Angeles and started to refurbish the stores and such decisions that were viewed with suspicion. After looking into his design and details of his plan, journalist Alex Needham (for the Guardian) uncovers how Slimane’s work was actually deeply inspired by Yves Saint Laurent himself.
The womenswear collection – S/S 2013 and A/W 2013 have received the most critical attention and enraged the press. The S/S collection as it intended to reposition the brand at the intersection of youth culture, high fashion and art and the A/W collection as it was inspired by the 1940’s clothes and had a reference to the Nazi occupation of France. However, these were very much consistent with Yves’ principles: to question the nature of luxury and to mix street fashion with the extravagant techniques of haute couture.
I think it’s surprising that Slimane’s logo – Saint Laurent Paris in Helvetica type – was regarded so controversial and revolutionary, considering it was used on Yves’ ready to wear line and The Rive Gauche shop front and dates back to 1966. In fact, the famous YSL logo has not been disposed, it still appears on clothes and on banners for the fashion shows. The historic references to the iconic brand do not end here. Slimane introduced black tresse ouverte grosgrain ribbons, black boxes with agrain-de-poudre texture, and contrast of black matt and gloss on the label’s bags and boxes. These are inspired by the label’s legendary tuxedo, while the embossed rectangles on the packaging are modelled on art deco panelling in Yves’s rue de Babylone home.
Ain’t Laurent without Yves? I think not.

Cara Delevingne Re-Vamps Thelma and Louise
Rumour has it that new best friends Cara Delevingne and Michelle Rodriguez are in talks about starring in the new adaptation of the 1991 cult classic, “Thelma and Louise”. They have been an inseparable pair off late, spotted drunkenly watching a Knicks basketball game together and now model Cara Delevingne and actress Michelle Rodriguez are rumored to be taking their relationship to a professional level.
Rodriguez, the star of the Fast and Furious film series, has been pinned to the film since late last year. A few names have been mentioned as her co-star, including Kristen Stewart, Annalynne McCord and Leighton Meester — but Michelle is pushing only for Cara.
The biker boots of the original 1991 Thelma & Louise actresses, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon’s are definitely going to be tough to step into though. Let’s watch this space!
Sophie Dahl Starts Blogging
The internet is currently saturated with blogs, instagram, tumblr and twitter accounts all promoting various juicing, sugar-free, raw and blood-type diet regimes. But the delectable Sophie Dahl, initially known for her international modeling career, brings her culinary skills to action by proving that fashion and food is the apt combination to blog about. Sophie is now a best-selling novelist and columnist who has written widely about her passion for food and cooking.
In her new online project, At the Kitchen Table, Dahl enlisted some big name creative’s to dish out recipes, short stories, and high-profile interviews. “I decided to create something with my sensibility at its core — but with a really eclectic mix of contributors bringing their voices to the table,” Dahl told Vogue.
The former model’s new project is one of those websites that you can spend half an hour browsing without even realizing – featuring designer interviews, recipes, short stories, features written by high-profile names, as well as fashion suggestions and beautiful photography.
Marc Jacobs : Remaking his Marc
Having bid adieu to his influential 16 years reign at Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs is now focusing his attention on overhauling his namesake brand, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs. The designer plans to treat his own label with a complete makeover by planning to open a flagship store in New York, expansion of his own shoe line, revive the handbag business which has lost its sheen in the recent years, redesigning his logo and also may be showing his collection in Paris rather than New York. His off-set line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, is also getting a facelift, with a name change happening in the near future. Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley will also showcase the line’s newest collection at New York Fashion Week for their first time with the brand.
To be opened at the end of the year, the flagship store is expected to include the various facets of the brand: Marc by Marc Jacobs store for women; the bookstore, Bookmarc; Marc by Marc for men; and Little Marc, for children. It will be a kind of fantastical MarcLand, where $2,300 shearling coats are sold alongside $2 condoms and $40 rain boots, each in some ephemeral way enhancing the value of the other.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney Collaborating!
A fashion win-win! Hollywood beauty Gwyneth Paltrow and top designer Stella McCartney are joining their perfectly manicured hands to start a clothing line together! The actress turned fashion guru, Paltrow revealed that they are close friends in real life and this is turning into a friendship with benefits for all of us. They are collaborating on a line of clothes for Paltrow’s lifestyle website Goop (http://www.goop.com/) which I am very excited to check out! I have always admired Gwyneth Paltrow’s flair for fashion and Stella McCartney’s designs have always been a personal favorite of mine and are available at Kitsch.
McCartney got her inspiration from Paltrow’s life and has designed ready to wear monochrome staples such as a black jacket, jeans, black jumpsuit as well as several hand bags. Together they have created a capsule collection, with McCartney as the designer and Paltrow as the curator who does the “tweaking”. They work well together because they understand their roles and don’t get in each other’s way, which is essential to create flawless fashion.
In Paltrow’s words, McCarntney “is the most insanely amazing designer” and I couldn’t agree more. I would have loved to see the classic Stella ‘Falabella’ bag in a new avatar in this line, but perhaps next time!
What does your favorite Model say about you?
I came across this fun and interesting piece by Lexi Nisita for refinery29, which talks about how your preference in supermodels reflects your personality!
Who do you like the most? Find out what that says about YOU!
Tyra Banks: If you pick this fierce lady then you is one powerful woman! You’ll never be content to be a “one-trick pony”, you like to try everything out at least once and you love being the best in the game.
China Machado: You enjoy standing out in a crowd and this comes easy to you. You never try too hard or force your way into the spotlight- everyone just naturally loves your company! You were born a star and you’ll always be one!
Cindy Crawford: You’re sexy but you don’t show off! You are subtle and classy which makes you special. You like being edgy and hate losing your cool.
Liu Wen: You’re like the ballerina of the model world. Graceful and reserved, you are not attention seeking but are still the apple of everyone’s eye.
Gisele: Gorgeous, successful and always reliable, Gisele is a foolproof icon! If you love her, you are probably a bit of a fitness freak as there is nothing hotter than her natural, exercise-induced glow!
Coco Rocha: You are fun, playful and adventurous- and you can always pull it off! Even though you come across sometimes as “grown-up”, there is a lot of spunk and personality in there too!
Kate Moss: You’re a complete badass! You smoke in the bathroom, and fall asleep in your eyeliner and don’t really care about the rules!
Twiggy: Sure, you like things a little twee, and that’s okay. You’ll grow up later. Oh, and you may or may not have an excessive penchant for black eyeliner.
Naomi Campbell: You are confident, powerful and assertive! Whatever it takes, you’ll never let anyone walk all over you. And yes, you have a temper. And maybe your phone slips out of your hand and flies at someone’s head.
Lauren Hutton: You stick to classics and you like things to be natural- but that doesn’t make you boring. You have impeccable taste and you always put a careful, personal touch to your style.
Kate Upton: You love yourself, and never let the haters get you down but you’re not conceited, either. Plus you know a great opportunity when you see one, and you’re not ashamed to dive head-first into it.
Linda Evangelista: You’re a big deal and you know it. And you’ll never under-sell yourself. As the famous quote goes, you’re not getting out of bed for less than $10,000!
